Every year I hold a public meeting where residents can learn about Radon Gas.
This year’s meeting was in January (2015) and was attended by more than 120 people from across the City. Health Canada and Tarion Warranty presented and City of Ottawa Staff from the Building Department were on hand to assist with questions.
If you were not able to attend the radon information session, you will find some links below to sites where you can find more information.
- Health Canada’s site includes information, links and videos and should be your first stop: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ewh-semt/radiation/radon/index-eng.php
- City of Ottawa/Ottawa Public Health offers information and radon test kits: http://ottawa.ca/en/residents/public-health/healthy-living/radon-your-home
- If your home is under seven years old, you have warranty coverage for excessive radon under the Ontario New Home Warranties Plan Act. Tarion Warranty Corporation’s video offers a great introduction http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54PhQtSBWUM
Radon is a colourless, odourless, radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the environment, coming from the natural breakdown of uranium in soils and rocks. It is widely found in homes across Canada. It does not tend to be an issue outside, as it dilutes to harmless levels in the atmosphere. However, in a confined space – like a basement – radon can accumulate to high levels. Exposure to high concentrations of radon can increase a person’s risk of developing lung cancer.
This meeting is open to all residents, not just those in Kanata North, as radon can be found everywhere. Please let your friends and neighbours across the city know about this information meeting which will both inform you and provide recommendations on actions that can ensure you have a safe level in your home.
